I
probably know the Bronco Bowl better than anyone on this post. When I was born, my
Father worked and bowled there. I was born terminally ill and premature. I
spent the first year of my life in Children's Medical Center, and the patrons
and the powers that be at Bronco paid all of my medical bills for those long
months. The Bronco Bowl became my home. I spent nearly every day of my first
seventeen years of my life in that place. I later began working there when I
became of age and worked there until the day the doors closed for the first
time. I have every square inch of the building seared into my memory. I
remember Jerry and Mary Jo Ferris who worked there and were very good friends
with my family. I remember manager Don Spiker, and I remember saying goodbye
to him as he left for home where he passed away later that night. I remember
the baby that was born in the ladies restroom. I remember the Indian league
who could drink more beer than anyone I've ever seen. I remember Jessie Brown
and Connie Mack who worked the lanes during the day. I remember Billie, Jaime
and Javier who worked the lanes with me at night. I remember the pool players,
like Jim, Wesley, Romero, brothers Johnnie and Luis, and Buddy McClendon. My
dad Junior could drink and play them under the table. I remember Jane Hicks
who was the league director and my protector . She took care of all the kids.
I remember Monica McCoy and my little sis Tiffany who owned the barber shop in
the back. I remember Big Kathy and little Kathy who'm I was secretly in love
with, and I remember her brother Keith who was also my very good friend. I
remember Benny and Bitsey Hinkle who owned the snack bar, then later, Nat
Segovia who took over. I remember it all. I hope someone remembers me. - Ardis
Stembridge (November 2004)
I moved back to Dallas
in 2001 and I remember seeing several great shows there. I saw 311 there 3
times, and the best Incubus show I ever saw was at the Bronco Bowl. I looking
at some of my favorite bands; they played the Bronco Bowl on the way up, like
Sound garden and Pearl Jam. It was just a cool place. Brandon (Incubus) even
remarked from the stage what a nice venue it was. It could have been bigger,
but that's a small quarrel with a place that game me and many others such great
memories. We'll miss... - Dave Robles
I lived in Oak Cliff
during the early 70's where I had my first date. She was from north Dallas and
she had never been to the Bronco Bowl. When we got there she was surprised at
how much entertainment there was. The Bronco Bowl used to have batting cages,
archery, golf, and tennis where you could practice on your swing besides
bowling. There were also concerts going on every other week. By the way I
married my first date, been married for 25 yrs. --Ismael Olivarez.
I grew up in Oak Cliff
and spent many fun times at Bronco Bowl. I have bowled, played pool and been to
concerts there. My grandparents took me there to bowl when I was a wee
thing...Oh I'd say around 1966 and on. I went for the pool and concerts as an
adult, I am now 44. Thanks for all the good times Bronco Bowl :-) Beth Morris
I may only be 23 but I
grew up in Oak Cliff and I had some great memories from there. I may be one of
those people who were in the "heavy metal" shows that the Wedgewood Home tried
so hard to have banned. From the age of 16 to 22, my favorite concerts i have
ever been to in my life were there. I remember the layout would change every
time I went in there. - Ryan Dolan
I was also at the grand
opening and the only thing I remember was Ms Mansfield. I was maybe 10. My
mother set me up on one of the concrete blocks that was on either side of the
stairs going up. birds eye view and being up high I was able to get a birds eye
view when she got out of the car. I'll never forget it. Did anybody remember
going to see Dick Clarks Caravan of Stars shows? - M. Bradshaw
I also attended the grand
opening ceremonies at the Bronco Bowl when Jayne Mansfield appeared. She signed
my Kimball High School yearbook and even left lipstick prints on the autograph
page. I still have that yearbook. Also, It really is amazing how many world
class acts appeared at the Bronco Bowl Arena. From the first show I saw in 1961,
the Everly Brothers, to the last show I attended in 2002, Mark Knopfller, it was
always THE place to see someone you really wanted to see very close up. - Jerry

I moved to Oakcliff from
Houston in 1999 when I was given the oppurtunity to work at Bronco Bowl. I have
to say in the two years I worked there I always felt at home. I met some of the
nicest people. It was the best time of my life. I would often sneak into the
theatre during sound check just to catch a glimpse of talent in it's purest
form. No fancy lights, just the band and in those moments I knew those memories
I would carry a lifetime. I found an appreciation for all artists despite their
style. Thank you for all the wonderful memories. - Lena Rives
I (we) went to the Bronco
Bowl for the first and last time in 1999 for the Jingle Bell Ball with my then
boyfriend, now adoring husband. We saw Moby, Cake and Vertical Horizon. It was
the "best concert I had ever been too," (my husband really enjoyed himself as
well). We will sorely miss the Bronco Bowl, it was a Dallas icon for many
years. May your website live long and cherish the memories. Thank you. - Pam
and Tom M., Rowlett, TX
Dancing at "The Pit"!
Ron Chapman would host dance contests and Danny Glasgow and I would always win
- that was in 1963 and 1964. Great fun. - J. McVey
Bronco Bowl was the first
place that I had ever learned to bowl at. I went with my sister and met up with
my boyfriend, I remember it to this day. I went to bowl my first ball and I was
so embarrassed I ended up losing the ball behind me instead of bowling it in
front of me. Bronco Bowl was an awesome hang out place when I was younger. I met
some great people there. Thanks for the great times in my life. - Peggy Arteaga
I will
always remember the great concerts I saw at BB. How the Bowl was large enough
and yet small enough to feel close to the band and the music. How it had the
perfect access to see band members as they came out to meet the fans. It is
amazing that a place like Bronco Bowl can bring people into Oak Cliff to
enjoy it in and all its splendor. That place sure is wonderful and it really
kind of is a shame that it will be replaced by a company who thinks it really
has employees that know what you need to know about home improvement.
Sincerely,
ms. lily
I used to adore the
Bronco Bowl. That was like 25 years ago. I remember the big round lights with
horses on them. We used to go when I was just a little girl and now I am 38 yeas
old. That was the funnest place in town as far as I was concerned!!! - Marnie
Means
I
used to go to Bronco Bowl to play pool back in 1968 and 1969. It was a pretty
cool place to hang out. - T. Johnson
I went to the grand
opening with my mother and Jayne Mansfield was the "big attraction". I remember
people crowding around her and even at that young age (10) I can remember
thinking, she"s pretty trashy. - Deborah Phillips
